Understanding Hockey

You don’t need to be a hockey expert to enjoy a great day out at the EuroHockey Championships. Here are some quick facts about Hockey to help you understand a bit more about our fast-paced, hugely entertaining sport and the friendly environment you can expect to experience at the event.

The game is 60 minutes long split into quarters. The most goals scored – wins!

11 players on the pitch - 10 on the field and one goalkeeper. There are five substitutes.

The artificially turfed field is 100 yards long by 60 yards wide (91.40 meters x 55 meters). Wembley football pitch is 115 yards long and 75 yards wide (105 metres x 69 metres).

Hockey is played with a hockey stick and a ball. The ball is slightly larger than a tennis ball.

The name hockey derives from the old French word "hoquet" meaning a shepherd's crook.
